Residents of Elstead in Surrey have the good fortune of four pubs to choose from. My personal favourite is The Golden Fleece
This is mainly due to the excellent Thai kitchen it has. My wife and I now have a Friday tradition. After I finish my part of the bedtime routine I then nip out for a Thai takeaway from here.
I get a chance to prop up the bar, order our food and sup a pint while I wait. Bliss.
It’s a very popular pub with locals and non locals alike. I suspect this is not only due to the excellent food but also the very friendly staff and open fire, which manages to provide some cosy ambiance in what is quite a reasonable space.
I’m not sure if the pub is attached to a brewery and it doesn’t have a particularly eclectic choice of brews. But what it does have is always palatable. The regular beers on tap are two from Sharps; the ever popular Doom Bar and less common Cornish Coaster (my favourite, a real session beer). There is also a choice from Fullers; this week it was HSB. And one other, Old Speckled Hen. You can find the usual lagers and ciders. There is also a nice selection of wines.
Over time we’ve tried most things on the menu but we have settled on a regular order which we both really enjoy. Spicy crackers, prawn toast, spare ribs, prawn penang curry, beef phad si ew and rice. All delicious, they also do a mean mussaman curry which is always my touchstone of a good Thai restaurant.
The starters always go down well and the penang curry has a good spice which has heat but doesn’t overpower the dish. Beef phad si ew is nice and mild and I always feel quite virtuous eating it as it contains a good selection of veg!
While I’d say that their prices are more than reasonable my only criticism is there is no discount for takeaway orders. A small price to pay for quality and a little oasis on a Friday night when I can forget about potty training, household chores and the like. And relax……
