On a day out in the woods
I’m often proud of my daughter, yesterday was no exception, I gave her the options of a trip into town to get some lunch, a walk in the “big garden with the huge glasshouse” (RHS Wisley) or a walk in the woods with a cafe. Note the standard toddler bribery technique of offering food as a reason for going out. Anyway, to my delight she chose the latter, I love going for a walk in the woods.
You remember my previous post on having a bad day? Galla has been confined to WWP base due to being ill, she was feeling a lot better yesterday so off to the woods we trotted, Georgie in the big buggy, overflowing changing back and carry potty in hand. We visited Winkworth Aboretum, which is National Trust owned and glorious at whatever time of year you decide to visit.
A full history of the Arboretum can be found on the National Trust website, but in a nutshell it came into being in 1937 when a local doctor and landowner, Wilfred Fox, decided to purchase 130 acres of woodland which had come up for sale next to his farm. He then set about clearing the scrub woodland and planting a wide variety of different trees and shrubs from around the world, his vision being to “paint the landscape using trees and shrubs”. It is a quite beautiful place.
The National Trust took full control of the Aboretum in 1988 they’ve added a small cafe and most recently an excellent playground made from materials sourced from the arboretum itself. We took in this part of the walk first and didn’t get much further, however there weren’t any other children around so we had the place to ourselves and it was good fun clambering around with her.
We did a bit more walking after that before heading back to the cafe for a pitstop. Midweek there’s not a huge variety available, your standard hot drinks (good coffee), cake and in terms of food, there was just soup or warm sausage rolls available. Neither of us minded though, hardly a nutritious snack but delicious all the same.
Galla was happy to go back to the woods and we had a lovely walk down to the lake to have a look at the boathouse there and see if we could see any ducks.
All in all a very relaxing and enjoyable few hours spent mooching around, after a difficult week for both of us (Galla not being well and me dealing with a moany, whiney toddler) it was lovely enjoying each others company again.
