Ways to Make Your Favourite Naughty Food Healthy
We all like to indulge every now and again. However, discovering the different way to prepare and eat can change your family’s relationship with food. Here you will find out some ingenious ways to create healthy alternatives for foods your family already loves.
Oven Bake Instead of Fry
When you fry something, you can see how much oil is absorbed by the food you are cooking – particularly when you are deep frying. Why not try oven-baking things you usually fry? You can do fries in the oven and fried chicken in the oven too, and the results are great!
Tossing your fries in some oil and seasoning and baking them in the oven gives great results. Oven baking coated chicken you’d usually deep fry is a brilliant way of making your favourite fried chicken meal, way healthier, but still super tasty.
Don’t Step Away From The French Fries
Self-proclaimed health nuts even like to have French fries from time to time. The next time you want fries try baking them instead of deep frying them litres of oil. When at home try tossing your sweet potato wedges in a bag with olive oil and semolina. This coating with ensures you get a crispy oven chip every time. You can also try using a healthy oil like coconut to help reduce your cholesterol levels.
You have two options you can make the pizza bread crust with a cauliflower alternative, but if the classic pizza dough is what you crave then why not make it from scratch at home and just switch out what’s on top of the pizza instead?
To really add some flavour to your pizza whip up some smoked veggies. Put your veggie in your gas smoker, this will ensure you don’t have to load up on cheese or fatty meats to add flavour. Try using eggplant or mushroom as they hold a lot of flavour and texture.
So how do you get started? Have your homemade pizza dough ready – spread it out on a baking pan that has been properly floured – brush the pizza dough with some extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle on your smoked veggies as well as a moderate amount of your favourite low-fat cheese. (If you’re feeling a little fancy, feel free to mix some black pepper, garlic powder and some of your favourite spices in with your veggies beforehand!)
Give Up The Soda
Soda is full of sugar and there is no way around this fact. Try brewing your own teas and sweetening with a natural sugar such as honey or raw cane sugar. Being able to control the number of calories you drink can really help in the aid of weight loss.
Poach, Don’t Fry!
Poaching is another great way to cook foods you’d usually fry. Take eggs for example; if you usually fry your eggs, try poaching them next time. Cooking them in hot water means you aren’t using any oils in the cooking process. Poached eggs are super healthy and super tasty; you aren’t covering up any of the natural flavours of the eggs with oil. As well as eggs, you can poach fish, fruit and even chicken, with scrummy results!
Use Steam Instead
Cooking veggies and fish by steaming them is a super healthy alternative. You retain all of their natural yummy flavours, whilst cooking them to perfection. By steaming your food, you’re adding no extra calories to your meal, making your favourite (usually unhealthy) meals, much healthier. You can top fish with flavourings like lemon and chilli and use the steam to infuse the flavours into your food.
Use Less Butter and Oil
It’s easy to use a lot of oil and butter when you’re cooking your food. An easy way to reduce your intake and make your food healthier is to reduce the amount of butter and oil you are using in your cooking. You’d be surprised how little oil you need to fry your food – a few sprays of oil in the pan is enough to fry off an onion. You can even make your own oil spray by decanting oil into a pump spray bottle.
Grilling your meat is an excellent way of making your favourites meat or veggies healthier. You can grill pretty much any meat or fish and it’s a quick way of cooking meat and fish as well. It’s also a great way of adding flavour to your meal, as those crispy charred bits are delicious! You can brush your meat or fish with a small amount of oil to stop it from sticking to your grill or griddle pan and add seasoning at the same time.
These small and simple changes can make a huge difference. As you have seen your usually unhealthy foods are made healthier in a flash.
