The glory of a Friday night takeaway….
Aaahh….the takeaway, a treat or maybe even a staple of parents everywhere (particularly those with babies or toddlers).
One of my regrets about leaving London, there aren’t many, is missing the delicious variety of food you could get delivered to your door, not forgetting the rich bounty of local eateries. I could nip out and 100yds down the road get an amazing pizza from our local neighbourhood Italian restaurant. More often than not we’d treat ourselves to a sublime takeaway from the amazing Zing-Zing…..I’m still trying to persuade them to open a branch in Guildford.
So when we arrived in Surrey I set about trying to find what the local dining out/eating in options were, while there are a number of excellent local pubs (more on these in a later post) serving delicious food and good quality beer, when it came to the takeaway however, we were faced with a pretty poor selection. Pizzas were the usual High Street brand and the local Thai/Chinese takeaways were awful. However by keeping my ear to the ground I heard about The Golden Fleece in Elstead. It’s a great local pub but also the kitchen is run by a Thai family and produces excellent Thai food, they also do takeaways.
There is something special about propping up the bar in your favourite pub, the staff know your name and you can catch up on a bit of reading, or social media or just enjoy life ticking along. This is our Friday night, we look forward to it every week. I get out of the house and enjoy a cheeky pint while waiting for the food, my wife gets to catch up on whatever American teen drama boxset has currently taken her fancy (her guilty pleasure) and we both get to enjoy excellent Thai food…..and relax.
